Despite an incredibly wide range of challenges facing the data center industry — from climate change to NIMBYism; supply chain disruption to the uncertain future of the metaverse — the news from the 2023 Data Center Knowledge Salary Survey is largely positive. A full 77% of respondents saw an increase in their salaries in 2022, a big jump from the 50% of last year’s respondents who said they expected one. Two-thirds of respondents are also satisfied or very satisfied with both their jobs and their compensation packages.
Still, the tech talent gap persists, and those dissatisfied offered several reasons why that may be. Our survey shows that industry workers are increasingly concerned not only with their total compensation but also with job security (with outsourcing and AI named as key concerns) and work-life balance. Knock-on effects of the Covid-19 pandemic continue to influence tech workers’ job satisfaction, especially regarding remote work. And although more raises were given in 2022 than 2021, the size of the average pay increase was smaller, while record-setting inflation drove the cost of living ever higher.
